What is Dedicated Web Hosting???
Unlike the shared web hosting that is offered, in which up to hundreds of sites run on a single web server, dedicated web hosting allows you lease a complete web server computer and use all of its resources for the hosting of one or more of your websites. Websites with very high demand, complicated development requirements or high uptime needs are likely to be best suited to a dedicated web hosting server.
There are two main different types of web hosting servers - web appliances and white box servers. Web appliances are usually compact, rack or wall mounted computers that have been specially optimised for web hosting needs. You should ensure that when choosing a web appliance dedicated server, you check that it has any software or scripting support you need.
White box servers are normal PCs or servers (usually with high specifications), and they typically run either a Windows or Unix-based operating system, as well as web server software (such as Apache or IIS) that delivers web content over the Internet.
Needless to say, dedicated web hosting solutions allow total control over every aspect of the server. You have the entire machine and all of its resources at your disposal when you are developing software or receiving large quantities of traffic to your website. You don't have to worry about other users encroaching on your resources or causing downtime for your website.
Having said this, dedicated web hosting has one major problem - the price. Dedicated web hosting solutions are much more expensive that Virtual Private Server (VPS) or shared web hosting solutions. You will have to expect to pay a considerable setup fee for a dedicated server as they require time-consuming configuration and maintenance, and in most cases, someone in your company will be required to manage the daily operation of the server. This could well mean hiring new staff. Things like troubleshooting problems with the server remotely, understanding the operating system, software web server and different configurations are all responsibilities that would fall into this category. Although your dedicated web hosting provider would replace or repair any hardware components that go wrong, you would be completely responsible for managing the software side of things. Extra costs in this respect may well make dedicated web hosting unfeasible for you.
